The Ultimate Catskills Real Estate Guide (Winter 2020)

For the past several years our most popular feature has been our annual Looky Loo’s Peak Inside the Catskills Real Estate Market. At Brooklyn to the Catskills, our mission is to promote tourism, economic development and entrepreneurship in the Catskills so we’re extremely proud that our guide has lead to the purchasing of at least three houses in the area (that we know of).  As with past editions, our “best of” criteria is completely subjective and shamelessly arbitrary, so take a look, plan your visit, and come see the best Sullivan County has to offer!

1. Catskills Real Estate Porn

If your main criteria in a house is that it makes your friends’ jaws drop, this stunner in Glen Spey is for you.  With over 2,600 square feet and set on 6+ private acres of woods, streams and waterfalls, this open, light-filled modern house in Glen Spey has everything you could possibly want.  It even has things you didn’t know you wanted, like heated towel racks, a sauna, a 3-car garage with EV charging station, a whole house generator and radiant heating.  How much you ask?  If you’re used to Brooklyn or Manhattan prices you might want to sit down and consider your options, because this house is listed at $499,000.

2. Mid-Century Handyperson’s Special

If I had the money I would quit my job, buy this house, and devote all of my time to restoring it to it’s original glory. Then I would throw parties so epic they would be talked about for years to come.  How is that possible?  Because there’s a kidney shaped swimming pool. And a tiki bar. And a tennis court.  And a pool house with an observation deck. And a guest house!! This set up virtually guaranties a party the likes of which has been not seen this side of the 1970’s.

I’m not going to lie, this house needs some work.  But with 25+ mountain view acres in Barryville and a listing price $349,000 it is a steal.  Live in the guest house while you restore the main house and grounds.  And please do it soon because I am trying to come up with schemes where I could buy this house before someone else does.  You can buy this house directly from the owner, Michael Parker who can be reached on his cell at (845) 820-2838.

3. Under $100k

This year’s “under $100k” came in slightly over at $109,900 but it was too special to not include.  This little gem in Glen Spey is located on Mohican Lake community and comes with stunning lake views and lake rights.  Featuring 2 bedrooms, wood floors, a freestanding fireplace and a 1-car garage, this is exactly where you’ll want to be kicking up your feet when summer finally rolls around,

4. I’ve Always Dreamed of Owning a Farmhouse

Whenever I think of “the country” my mind goes directly to farmhouses with their big kitchens, porches filled with rocking chairs, and lots and lots of bedrooms.  This 5 bedroom, 3 bath classic farmhouse is set on 2.3 bucolic acres in Narrowsburg and delivers on all fronts.  It then goes above and beyond with an in-ground swimming pool and outdoor pizza oven.  My favorite part is the finished attic, which you could turn into a guest room or, better yet, a make it a fun family room that is filled with board games and where all electronic devices are banned.

Shall we cut to the chase and talk money?  Listed at $319,000, this property has been on the market for almost two years. Maybe the time is right for you to take a look and make an offer.  Or at least come up and check out what the Catskills real estate market has to offer.

5. You Just Won the Powerball!

Believe it or not, the most fabulous houses in the Catskills aren’t always the most expensive.  While still expensive at $749,000, this 6 bedroom, 4 bath house in Mongaup Valley is lakefront and features stunning mountain views.  It has a deck, a pool, a hot tub and a dock for your boat (you just won Powerball, you need to buy a boat).

Oh, in case you were hoping to spend a bit more, the Powerball house we featured last year featuring the irresistible sunken living room is still on the market and the price has dropped significantly.  You probably still need to win the Powerball to buy it, but it can’t hurt to dream.
