Fresh produce. Grown locally. Sold in season.

Growing up in the suburbs of Pennsylvania we didn’t have a farmers’ market.  Everything we bought came from George’s, the grocery store at the local strip mall in the center of town.  Next to the lobster tank at George’s was a koi pool with a giant water wheel – I believe what the kids today call experiential marketing.  We did get our milk from an actual dairy farm and that was always a fun trip because my dad would buy us kids ice cream cone when we went with him.

My first encounter with a farmers’ market was when when I moved to New York City and discovered the market in Union Square.  The best part of the farmers’ market was the brief window in the fall when honey crisps were in season.  Apples as big as your head that were so crisp and juicy you needed to eat them with a napkin under your chin. It was always a special treat and you’d eat as many as you could before the season ended and you’d have to wait another year before they appeared again.

When we first started going to the Catskills I was delighted to find local farmers’ markets throughout the area.  Unlike in the city (but much like my beloved honey crisps) they are seasonal so you need to catch them while you can.  Below is a list of Sullivan County farmers’ markets that are ongoing this summer.  Come visit and check them out in person!
